Teaching Philosophy
Sing from the Heart Studios
Singing requires a balance of vocal technique and artistic expression that work together, not separately. There has to be an element of “from the heart” when singing. Voice science innovator Jo Estill said, "Everyone has a beautiful voice. You just have to know how to use it." I believe this to be true. Through consistent singing training and support, the voice can become more reliable, free, and expressive.
The mission of Sing from the Heart Studios is for each unique student to develop the skills, tools, and courage to build a sustainable voice—one that is flexible through registers, adaptable across musical styles, and grounded in emotional expression. Rooted in my background as a professional musical theatre performer and music educator, I teach through the lens of my own singing experiences and continuous professional development courses in vocal pedagogy and voice science.
Sing from the Heart Studios offers high quality online and in-person singing lessons, audition preparation, and performance coaching. I help students develop their vocal technique, build audition books, find usable 32 bar cuts, learn to “act the song,” and prepare for the role! I am here to support artists through every aspect of the singing and performance journey.
Sing from the Heart Studios is built from six core values: joy, passion, student-centered learning, growth, preparation, and loyalty.
Joy
I believe joyful experiences in the studio are essential to vocal development. Lessons are a safe space for students to be themselves, try new sounds (even silly ones), and express music in their authentic way without judgment. This curiosity, play, and vocal exploration is crucial in developing the voice.
Passion
I lead with passion as a teacher. As a musical theatre artist, expressing emotion through singing has always been the most exciting part of my work. Through lessons, I aim to help foster a love for singing, authenticity, and self-expression.
Student-Centered Learning
Each session is catered to the student’s specific musical and performance goals. The lesson’s emphasis might be on tone quality, finding head-voice, matching pitch, voice flexibility, musicianship knowledge, acting the song, or audition preparation. Each student is unique, so each lesson should be too!
Growth
Developing a singing voice is a life-long, evolving journey through time. Learning to sing requires courage, practice, and determination. The moments of growth in voice training can be small victories or something more transformational overall. I strive to celebrate those moments of development, and guide my students to more “light bulb” moments.
Preparation
Going back to Jo Estill’s quotation, I believe that we can make substantial progress with healthy singing foundations, consistency, and preparation, not just innate talent. I strive to give students the vocal foundations and serious performance preparation needed to be their best and most confident in their gifts!
Loyalty
I am committed to my students and their unique journeys. I want to be my students’ biggest cheerleader during their artistic journey, giving them a space to feel heard, accepted and supported. Some of the most impactful people in my life have been my voice teachers, and I want to pay it forward to my students.
I am also committed to staying in touch with new vocal pedagogy and science-based ideas. Currently I am working towards my Estill Figure Proficiency Voice Certification, focusing on science approaches to vocal sounds and qualities.
